Waterfall hopping from Ubud

Four waterfalls sit within an hour of Ubud, and two private tours string them together. Here is what each fall is like, which one you can swim in, and what each tour leaves you to pay.

A waterfall day from Ubud usually means three or four of the same falls: Tegenungan to the south, and Tibumana, Tukad Cepung and Kanto Lampo to the east. They are close enough to see in one day and different enough to be worth it. One is a big roaring drop, one sits inside a cave, one is a swimming hole, and one is a staircase of rock you climb in the spray.

Two private tours on Viator do the circuit. One includes every fee and lunch; the other starts cheaper and leaves the gates to you.

The quick answer

Tegenungan is the biggest and busiest; Tibumana is the one where you can swim; Tukad Cepung has the famous light rays in a cave; Kanto Lampo is a stepped fall you wade and climb. The gates add up to IDR 85,000 for three falls or IDR 110,000 for four, cash. The three-waterfall tour costs from $53 with all fees and lunch; the four-waterfall tour from $25 transport only, or more with its inclusive option. Expect a lot of steep, wet steps.

Tegenungan, Tibumana, Tukad Cepung or Kanto Lampo: which is best?

Tukad Cepung for photos, Tibumana for a swim, Tegenungan for raw power and Kanto Lampo for fun. Seeing three of them in a day gives you most of the variety.

  • Tegenungan: a broad drop of about 15 metres into a pool some 30 metres across, in the lowlands on the Petanu River. The most famous and the most crowded. See the best time to go.
  • Tibumana: one tall, narrow fall into a waist-deep pool in Bangli, reached through a short jungle path. Get there soon after the 7 am opening; it fills up just before lunch.
  • Tukad Cepung: the fall drops into a cave, and on sunny mornings shafts of light cut through the gap, roughly 9 to 11 am. You walk through ankle-deep water to reach it.
  • Kanto Lampo: water spreads over a wide stack of black rock steps. People climb into it for photos. Wet, slippery and a lot of fun.

Skip Tukad Cepung if you can't cope with steep stairs, or if your day falls in the flood months. Skip Tegenungan's pool edge at noon.

What does the three-waterfall tour include?

Hire Bali Driver's Best of Bali Waterfalls costs from $53 per person and covers Tukad Cepung, Tibumana and Tegenungan with all fees and taxes, lunch, water and hotel pickup.

The three-waterfall day gives about 60 minutes at each fall, in an air-conditioned car with your own driver-guide. It lasts about 8 hours; one guest was picked up at 8 am and back by 5:30 pm. Options add the Gates of Heaven and Tirta Gangga in east Bali, the Ubud Monkey Forest, snorkelling at Blue Lagoon, or a rice terrace with a jungle swing (age 10 and up for the swing).

It holds 5.0 from more than 3,200 reviews. The $53 is the per-person price for the largest group size, so a couple pays more each; Viator shows the exact figure once you pick a date and group. Ages run from 7 to 65, and the listing asks for moderate fitness.

How much does the four-waterfall tour really cost?

From $25 per person on the Transport Only option, plus IDR 110,000 in cash at the four gates and your own lunch. The Inclusive Without Lunch option covers the gates for a higher price.

Rukmana Bali Tour's four-waterfall day adds Kanto Lampo to the usual three and runs 8 to 10 hours. Side by side with the three-waterfall tour:

Even with gates and a simple lunch, the four-waterfall day usually comes in cheaper. What the $53 buys is no cash at all, an operator with far more reviews, and a fixed lunch stop. Both are tiered by group size, and neither includes the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000, which no tour does.

Can you swim at the waterfalls on a waterfall tour?

At Tibumana, yes. At Tegenungan, only if staff open the pool that day. Tukad Cepung and Kanto Lampo are wades, not swims.

Tibumana's pool is usually waist deep and cold, especially in the morning; stay out from directly under the fall. Tegenungan's designated swimming area opens and closes with the current, which means it is often roped off after rain and through much of November to March. A tour can't promise either: our swimming guide has the details.

Guests do get in. One reviewer in December 2025 enjoyed "the swims" on the three-waterfall tour; another, in April 2025, warned the water was "vey cold". Wear swimwear under your clothes so you can decide at the pool.

How fit do you need to be for waterfall hopping in Bali?

Fit enough for several hundred steep, wet steps in humid heat. Both tours say they are not for travellers with back or heart problems, or for pregnant travellers.

Add it up: about 200 steps each way at Tegenungan, 15 to 20 minutes of steep stairs down to Tukad Cepung, around 12 minutes to Tibumana, and a short flight at Kanto Lampo. Every climb back is harder than the walk down, and the midday climb at Tegenungan is hot.

Guests are blunt about it. One wrote: "Have to be fit, very steep down and climb to first waterfall, others slightly less arduous." Another: "Looots of steep stairs to the waterfalls so not suitable for unfit people or people with eg. knee problems." A third called it "harsh exercise". If your knees complain, drop Tukad Cepung and spend longer at Tibumana and Kanto Lampo: your driver can change the plan.

What do guests say about Bali waterfall tours?

Guests report steep stairs, cold water and busy photo spots, and praise drivers who switch to quieter falls. Some report a waterfall swapped or skipped, so confirm the stops before you set off.

  • Shoes: "Take your crocs, these are essential", wrote one guest; another said one waterfall can only be reached by walking in water.
  • Swaps: a December 2025 guest "changed one waterfall to a less touristic one". On the four-waterfall tour, a 4-star reviewer was taken to Ulu Petanu instead of Tegenungan, and a 2-star reviewer in 2023 never got to Tukad Cepung. On the three-waterfall tour, one group skipped Tukad Cepung for safety on slippery rocks.
  • Traffic: "if coming from Kuta the drive there is at least an hour due to traffic both ways".
  • Guides: nearly every 5-star review names the driver and thanks them for photos.

Our advice: when the driver messages you before the day, list the falls you want in writing. If one is closed for flooding, you can agree the swap there and then.

What order and season work best for a waterfall day?

Start by 8 am, put Tukad Cepung in the 9 to 11 am window for the light, and finish at Tegenungan after the midday rush. Go between April and October if you can.

The three-waterfall tour already runs Tukad Cepung, then Tibumana, then Tegenungan. That suits the light and lands you at Tegenungan as the crowds thin. If you add snorkelling or Heaven's Gate, ask for an earlier pickup; one guest who started at 9:30 with the snorkel add-on reached the last fall after dark.

From December to February Tukad Cepung often shuts when the gorge floods, and the rivers run brown everywhere. On Nyepi, 8 March 2027, nothing is open and no tour runs. Every option here cancels free up to 24 hours before, so you can rebook if a storm settles in.
